Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to speak on April 8

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be the Northampton Community College’s Annual Humanities Program keynote speaker of for academic year 2020-2021. The virtual live event, “A Conversation with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,” will be held at 7 p.m. April 8.

He is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points, a six-time NBA champion and the league’s only six-time MVP, He was the recipient of the Rosa Parks Award, the Double Helix Medal, and both the Ford and the Presidential Medals of Freedom. He was named California STEM Ambassador because of his commitment to youth education.

After 50 years as an athlete and activist, he offers his perspectives as a nationally recognized speaker who regularly appears on the lecture circuit. Northampton Community College will present an online Basic Management Skills workshop, the first of its Management Certificate Program events from 8 a.m. to noon on May 3 and 4, online.

The presentations are designed to quickly and efficiently develop the management skills of supervisors, managers and high-potential employees. Northampton Community College will hold an online program on understanding the opioid epidemic and the disease of addiction from 10 a.m. to noon on both April 12 and 19. The highly accredited instructor has a private practice for 20 plus years and speaks at Lehigh and Rutgers universities on the topic.

Northampton Community College is holding dual enrollment information sessions via Zoom at 6 p.m. on April 7, 14, 15, 19 and 21. THe sessions cover jump starting a college career and earning transferable credits towards a future degree.

New learning modules launched

Northampton Community College has launched an initiative supporting K-12 educators teaching online or in the classroom. The program features innovative professional learning content from global leader Discovery Education.

The digital curriculum resources for K-12 classrooms-is comprised of seven online on demand learning modules. These units help current educators develop the skills needed to feel confident and successfully navigate the fully online or hybrid learning environment.

Topics such as online assessments, digital citizenship, fostering learner engagement, creating a sense of community and using technology to help meet individual learner needs are addressed.

Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hires two

Moravian College announced two new hires in the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as part of the college’s ongoing efforts to improve the campus climate and continue developing an inclusive community for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Dr. Nicholas Creary will fill the role of Associate Provost of Academic Inclusion and Innovation and Associate Professor. Dr. Daisy Purdy will act as the Associate Provost of Community, Equity, and Engagement and also join the faculty as an Assistant Professor.

Penn State Lehigh Valley

PSU – LV wins first Place

A team of four Penn State Lehigh Valley students took home a $3,000 prize for winning first place in the Smeal Undergraduate Sustainability Case Competition held on March 27, 2021. Penn State network teams were challenged to use business and markets to solve real-world social justice and environmental conservation challenges. The project used clean energy, climate change, urban renewal and/or rural economic development to address climate change while simultaneously providing economic benefits to low-income communities.

The teams were allotted one week after the case was released to educate themselves, conduct research and interview experts. The final round teams presented their strategy to a panel of judges that included leading sustainability and social impact executives.

Professor of Marketing,Dr. Denise T. Ogden was faculty mentor for the winning team of Hemil Patel (Project and Supply Chain Management), Simon Tomaszewski (Health Policy and Administration), Brianna Peters (Business Management/Marketing) and Ben Stratz (Finance and Pre-Med).

Festival of Colors on April 9

The Global Student Organization, PSU-LV, is hosting a “Festival of Colors” bonfire at 6: 30 p.m., April 9 on the soccer fields. Students will celebrate brighter days ahead by tossing notes into the fire, symbolizing the much-anticipated divestiture from 2020 and COVID-19, an act is inspired by the Punjabi and the Indian culture of Lohri and Holika, the celebration of the win of good over evil.

The event includes a DJ, trivia games with prizes, food, sand art, glow-in-the-dark necklaces and more. The first 50 students will receive free t-shirts, first come first serve.
